I/c, English Editorial Unit (EEU), DKMA
The English Editorial Unit (EEU) of the Directorate of Knowledge Management in Agriculture (DKMA), under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), plays a vital role in communicating agricultural knowledge to stakeholders in India and worldwide. It is responsible for developing, editing, and publishing a wide range of English-language content in agriculture, animal sciences, and allied fields. The unit ensures that ICAR’s research outputs are professionally edited, scientifically rigorous, and aligned with global publishing standards.
EEU manages the complete editorial and production process — from manuscript screening, plagiarism checks, copyediting, formatting, design, layout, and proofreading to final print and digital publication. A core mandate of the unit is to promote the timely and accurate dissemination of ICAR’s research and innovations to researchers, academicians, farmers, students, extension workers, and policy makers.
A key responsibility of the unit is the publication of ICAR’s three prestigious research journals: The Indian Journal of Agricultural Sciences, The Indian Journal of Animal Sciences, and The Indian Journal of Fisheries. These peer-reviewed, monthly journals are indexed internationally and provide a platform for publishing original research, reviews, and short communications across agriculture and allied sciences.
The EEU also oversees the editorial production of two popular periodicals Indian Farming (monthly) and Indian Horticulture (bimonthly). These farmer-friendly magazines simplify scientific information and are widely circulated among farmers and agricultural stakeholders, offering insights on best practices, success stories, innovations, and policy developments.
In addition to journals and magazines, the unit is responsible for editing and publishing a variety of ICAR publications — including Annual Reports, institutional documents, technical bulletins, books, manuals, and proceedings. These serve as knowledge resources for universities, field officers, and practitioners, ensuring accuracy, clarity, formatting, and adherence to SI units and ethical publishing practices.
EEU is also active in digital publishing. A major initiative has been the development and management of the ICAR e-Pubs portal (https://epubs.icar.org.in). The portal supports online submission, peer review, DOI assignment through Crossref, and integration with global citation databases. This open-access platform serves as ICAR’s central repository for its journals and publications, offering over 41,500 full-text articles and archival content.
The unit ensures research integrity through iThenticate plagiarism detection and is working to assign DOIs to all ICAR journal articles, including retrospective coverage from 1994 onwards. The e-Pubs platform currently hosts 60 journals from ICAR institutes and receives traffic from over 200 countries. With Google Analytics integration, DKMA can track usage trends and tailor content dissemination accordingly.
EEU also conducts capacity-building activities such as editorial workshops and provides support to authors and reviewers across ICAR institutes. Its efforts uphold the quality and impact of ICAR’s English publications.
In essence, the English Editorial Unit is central to ICAR’s knowledge dissemination mission — ensuring that the organization’s scientific advancements reach a global audience in a credible, accessible, and impactful manner.
